Men’s basketball team opens GLIAC play

After dropping two of three games over Thanksgiving break, the men’s basketball team heads into GLIAC play on the road this weekend with an opportunity to win their first road game of the season.

NMU head coach Bill Sall said a win will require a team effort.

“We’re hoping to find a way to grind out a win on the road,” Sall said. “The biggest thing for this team is we have no superstar. This is a team effort, and it all depends on how the team does together. The more we grow together, the better we will be.”

NMU earned their second win of the season Tuesday, Nov. 25 with a 56-53 win over the University of Minnesota Duluth at Berry Events Center.

The ’Cats will hit the court again in their first conference game of the season when they travel to Walsh University at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4.

Spencer Huss said he is ready to see how conference games this season will work out.

“I am looking forward to getting the GLIAC season started,” Huss said. “We’re playing two great teams, so we have a hill to climb, but hopefully we can see how we’re going to stack up against them this year.”

The ’Cats will finish the road trip when they visit the Malone University Pioneers at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6.

Sophomore forward Brett Branstrom said the ’Cats are starting to coming together as a team.

“We are coming long way and we are a young team,” Branstrom said. “We started the season out rough, but we’ve gotten a couple wins and losses since then. A lot of our younger guys are learning, and I think we are getting better everyday.”
