Volleyball team continues dominance over Tech

The Northern Michigan University Women’s Volleyball started this week with a 3-0 victory against Michigan Tech.

The win was the 10th straight victory for the ’Cats over their U.P. rival.

The Wildcats traveled downstate this past weekend to the Grand Valley State University Lakers Friday, Oct. 24 in Allendale, Mich. followed by a trip to the Ferris State University Bulldogs Saturday Oct. 25 in Big Rapids, Mich.

Sophomore middle hitter Anna Aycock said that the energy in the first set of playing GVSU was great.

“The team did a great job coming out strong against Grand Valley in the first set,” Aycock said. “The excitement and energy all around was phenomenal.

“I think that something we could have done better overall this weekend is making less errors in all aspects of the game.”

Head coach Dominic Yoder said despite the losses of the weekend, learning from each experience was the key.

“We were missing two key players for the weekend, so i think having a young and unproven lineup was a challenge but a good learning experience,” Yoder said. “Coming off of a weekend, playing two top-ranked teams in GLIAC, the team is pushing through.

“Our team served aggressive and competed. We take one day at a time and learn from each experience.”

Following the win over Michigan Tech this past Tuesday, Oct. 28, NMU will host Wayne State University Friday, Oct. 31 and Saginaw Valley on Saturday, Nov. 1.

Junior libero Alex Berger is ready for the weekend, after a win this Tuesday.

“As a team, we are very excited to play this weekend and compete,” Berger said. “After a phenomenal team performance last night for a 3-0 sweep of Michigan Tech, we want to take that great energy and flow and bring it back to our home court this weekend against both Wayne and Saginaw,.

“We are extremely looking forward to playing at home this weekend, there is nothing better than your own fans, your own gym, your own atmosphere.”

Last season, the ’Cats had a 3-1 win over Wayne State and a 3-0 win against Saginaw Valley. Currently in the 2014 season, Wayne State is 5-9 in GLIAC while Saginaw Valley stands behind NMU at 10-4. NMU is 11-3 in conference play, 11-12 overall.

“Both Saginaw and Wayne are going to be tough matches, and both matches will be a battle, Berger said. “No team, as all the teams in our conference, will go down without a grand fight and we cannot wait for it.”
