The North Wind is an independent student publication serving the Northern Michigan University community. It is partially funded by the Student Activity Fee. The North Wind digital paper is published daily during the fall and winter semesters except on university holidays and during exam weeks. The North Wind Board of Directors is composed of representatives of the student body, faculty, administration and area media.

As cases continue to see record increases in Michigan, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer urged Michiganders to rethink the way they’re planning to hold the holidays. In a press conference on Nov. 12, she urged people to only hold Thanksgiving with individuals currently in their household.

According to the NMU Safe on Campus dashboard, there are currently 88 active positive cases of COVID-19. Of those who have tested positive, four are employees, 47 are off-campus and 37 are on-campus.

There are currently 46 students staying in the quarantine and isolation housing in Spalding Hall of the 150 available. In NMU’s latest round of surveillance tests from Oct. 26 to Nov. 2, they tested 532 people and found 30 positive cases for a positive percentage rate of 5.64% 

Data provided by the state of Michigan says Marquette County currently has a cumulative case count of 1,957 which is an increase of 513 cases from the previous COVID-19 update. Marquette  County also reports 20 deaths linked to COVID-19 an increase of two from the previous update.

Additionally, Region 8, which contains the UP, has a cumulative case count of  10,050 which is an increase of 1,951 from the previous COVID-19 update. The region has also seen 150 deaths linked to the virus. The region is also seeing cases in correctional facilities incre with 111 active cases in Marquette, according to the Michigan Department of Corrections

According to the New York Times, Michigan has recorded 251,584 total cases so far. They also say over the past week, there has been an average of 5,625 cases per day, an increase of 119% from the average two weeks earlier. 
The New York Times additionally reports the United States has a total of over 10.5 million cumulative cases and 234,835 deaths. Over the past week, the New York Times reports that there has been an average of 91,878 cases per day, which is an increase of 51% from the average of two weeks earlier.
